Gary Hindley

Sheffield artist Gary Hindley is most well known in the city for his giant portraits which adorn the side of Europe’s largets Grade 2 listed building, Park Hill Flats.

The portraits are of people who have lived on and grew up on the flats, currently undergoing a huge redevelopment, based on black-and-white BBC documentary footage. When Gary began the ambitious project earlier this year, he only knew the identity of one of his subjects, caretaker Grenville Squires. However, thanks to press and publicity help from us at Digital Entrepreneurs, former Park Hill resident Charlie Lindley came forward to suggest that one of the paintings could be of his late brother Jeffrey. Remarkably, it turned out that not only was Jeffrey’s face which would be one of the paintings, but Charlie himself was the subject of the next painting Gary was working on.

Gary is planning writing a book about the people of Park Hill, and he has other exciting commission work in the pipeline.
